Why I recommend Octopus Energy

As a developer who spends the day integrating complex APIs - Cin7, Sage, custom ERPs - into Magento 2, I'm naturally drawn to companies that are built API-first. Octopus Energy is one of them. Their entire platform is built on technology, and it shows: transparent billing, a genuinely useful app, and real-time half-hourly consumption data that you can pull via their public API.

That's actually why I built an API tracker that pulls live tariff data from the Octopus Energy API on a cron every few hours. I wanted to monitor price changes over time in a way that comparison sites don't bother to show. The live tariff rates on this page come from that same data. When a supplier's API is that clean and open, it tells you the company actually cares about transparency.

I'm on the Flexible Octopus tariff, which tracks wholesale prices and adjusts quarterly. The app lets you see your real-time usage, adjust your Direct Debit yourself, and track your balance - no waiting on hold to ask what you owe.

Based in Tonbridge, Kent - Octopus has been the right call for my household. With the 13.5% July price cap rise now confirmed, I'd especially recommend anyone on a variable tariff to look at fixing now. Do your own comparison on MoneySavingExpert - but if you're going with Octopus, make sure you use a referral link.

Billing Transparency

Direct Debit adjustments are simple and you can see exactly what you're being charged for.

Customer Support

Spoke to a real person when I called. Email responses within a working day in my experience.

App & Online Tools

The Octopus app is one of the better utility apps I've used. Real-time data, clear balance, easy to manage.

Value for Money

Consistently competitive on price - though worth checking on comparison sites regularly as always.

Energy Prices 2026

What's happening with energy prices in 2026?

If you're on a standard variable tariff (which most people are), your bills are about to rise significantly. From 1 July 2026, the Ofgem Energy Price Cap increases by 13.5%, taking the typical annual dual-fuel bill from £1,641 to £1,862. The gas unit rate alone rises by 27.7%.

The driver is the Middle East conflict - the ongoing Iran-US tensions have pushed wholesale gas prices sharply higher, and those costs are now being passed through to UK consumers. As Martin Lewis put it on MoneySavingExpert: "The Middle East conflict will finally force its way onto most people's energy bills from July."

The good news? Martin Lewis's headline advice is that for most people this rise is voluntary. If you're on a variable tariff, getting onto a fixed deal that beats the current cap means you lock in before July's increase hits - and you'd be around 15% cheaper than the new cap from day one.

As a developer I pull Octopus's live API data daily - and from what I can see, Octopus's fixed tariff options are currently tracking below the cap. Worth doing a full market comparison on MoneySavingExpert's Cheap Energy Club to see the cheapest fix for your region and usage.

Decision Guide

Should you switch supplier before July?

The 13.5% July price cap rise changes the equation. Here's where you likely stand.

You're on a price-capped variable tariff

From 1 July your bills rise 13.5%. Martin Lewis's advice is clear: this rise is voluntary for most people. You can get off the cap now by locking into a fixed deal - ideally one priced at or just below the current cap. From July, that fix will be around 15% cheaper than staying on the cap.

Your fixed deal is ending soon

Start comparing now - if you're within 50 days of your deal ending, you won't face exit fees and can switch immediately. Rolling over to a default variable tariff means you'll be on the new 13.5%-higher cap from July. Lock in a fix before that happens.

You're on a cheap fix with time left

Don't rush. If you're well inside a cheap fixed deal you could face early exit fees and end up worse off. Sit tight and set a reminder to start comparing 50 days before your deal ends.

Money is tight right now

Don't wait until the July rise lands. Compare your options now and if you can lock in below the current cap, do it. Octopus Energy also offers the Octo Assist support scheme - direct financial help, payment plans, and standing charge waivers for customers who need it.

Business customers get £75 credit

If you're signing up for a business energy account, the Octopus referral scheme still applies - and you'll receive £75 credit rather than £50. Business accounts are eligible for the full range of Octopus tariffs. As always, verify current terms on the Octopus Energy website.

Octo Assist - help if you're struggling with bills

Octopus Energy created the Octo Assist scheme to provide extra help to customers most in need. It's a £40 million support fund that goes beyond standard debt management and offers a range of practical and financial assistance.

Yes. The Octopus Energy referral scheme is active in 2026. My code wise-peach-776 is valid. The energy price cap rises 13.5% from July 2026, so there's no better time to switch and lock into a fix. Always verify current terms at octopus.energy.
Possibly - it depends on your current supplier's exit fees. If you're on a variable tariff, you can switch at any time. If you're mid-way through a fixed contract, there may be early termination charges. Check your current contract before switching.

Yes - there is no official cap on the number of people you can refer. Each successful switch using your link earns you a £50 credit when that person pays their first Direct Debit. Octopus does ask that you share your link genuinely rather than spamming it across social media.

No promo code or coupon code is needed.
